Forget spotify! Jimbelunga residents rock it out with the ‘Music for Wellbeing’ group program

Every Wednesday for the past couple of weeks residents of Jimbelunga have enjoyed a range of popular and country songs from the 40’s, 50s and 60s.

Starting with five participants and the group has grown to fourteen and is run by Amy Henschell, our social health psychologist based at Logan.

Amy plays guitar and sings, with residents getting into the swing more recently requesting songs. Popular artists include Jimmy Little, Elvis, Jonny Cash, Patsy Cline, The Seekers, Bing Crosby and Perry Como.

Aimed at enhancing mood, self esteem and social connections of participants, the program engages residents through musical activity  including singing, dancing, and playing percussion. The group is also focused on remembering, reminiscing, and sharing memories, experiences and music knowledge.

It is also tailored to be accessible to those suffering dementia.

Social Health manager, Bruce Simpson, also a musician, the secrets out now – has become involved in the group and will be involved in weeks to come. The program runs for seven weeks.
